My daily morning routine: that helps my day to flow better.

Routines are vital to my design. As a neurodivergent mum and a Capricorn (a Generator in Human Design), I need routine to thrive. Consistency equals stability to me. Not only does it help me, it also helps my family. My eldest son is Autistic and a Capricorn (a Projector in Human Design) also, my youngest is a Scorpio (and also potentially autistic and is a Generator in Human Design), so they both thrive on routine and structure. My husband is an Aries and potentially ADHD (a Manifesting Generator in Human Design). He says that he doesn’t like routines, but I see him thrive when he sees that we thrive in a routine because it gives him the freedom to create spontaneity within our predictable routines. In this blog post, I share my daily routine that I have been using for years, that helps my day to flow better. This is the blueprint for my morning routine:

Open All The Blinds

At 6:30am, I open all of the blinds and curtains in the house. This allows the morning light to filter into the house. I call this “waking up the house”. Our homes have an energy and a ‘personality’ of their own. It is like having an extra family member. It protects and nurtures us when we have a good relationship with it. This is important to me being a house witch. By opening the blinds, it also prompts other household members who aren’t already awake to wake up. Sunlight prompts our natural rhythms to prepare for the day. I also love seeing the sunrise. It invokes a sense of gratitude into my heart, knowing that I have been gifted another day on this planet.

Make The Beds

Next, (if everyone is out of bed by the time I open all of the blinds) I make the beds. When Tom (hubby) gets up, he goes straight to getting breakfast started for the boys whilst I do the other tasks. Making the bed (for me) creates a sense of calmness and achievement. The bedrooms then feel like they have order and stability. This gives me a feeling of self motivation and love, and it drives me to keep going with doing what feels right for myself and my family during the day. Sometimes I will pivot back to this activity if family members aren’t out of bed yet.

Put A Load Of Washing On

Next, I take the washed clothes out of the washing machine (that I put on during my evening routine) and put them in a washing basket. Then I put another load of washing on. I aim to do 2-3 loads of washing a day to keep this task a micro task rather than a big task. I hang this load of washing during my evening routine (if a work day) or my afternoon cleaning session (if a weekend or a holiday).

Hang The Washing

Next, I hang the washing that is in the basket. This activity is actually quite invigorating because I get to be outside in nature. I feel the sun, the trees and the birds talk to me, and I can allow my mind to wonder during this task. I feel surprisingly refreshed from hanging the washing in the morning.

Help The Kids To Get Dressed (After Their Breakfast)

Next, I will help my sons to get dressed. On Sundays, I prepare their outfits for the week in their wardrobes. It makes it easy to quickly grab their allocated outfit for the day and hand it to them.

Help The Kids To Brush Their Teeth

Then the boys will brush their teeth. This is the last task that they need to complete before they can play. We have a chores list for them on our fridge for them to check, but they know what comes next now.

Make Lunches

I love when I have made the lunches in my evening routine, then I can skip this step in the morning. Sometimes it doesn’t happen in the evening. I find that it works better in the morning. Most of the time I do this after I have had breakfast. It depends on how quickly Tom has made my breakfast.

Have Breakfast

Tom makes the breakfasts in the morning. When it comes to Tom and I having breakfast, the boys are already in the play room playing together. This a time where Tom and I can have a catch up chat with each other.

Brush My Teeth

I then brush my teeth, and finish doing my hair and makeup if I didn’t get time to finish during my morning ritual.

Pack Bags

Then I will pack the school bags and my bag. I get the shoes and hats ready as well. This is so we can just grab our gear when ready to go.

Pack Dishwasher

I will then pack the dishwasher with Tom, and the dishwasher will usually get turned on to wash. We unpack it later that day.

Tidy Kitchen

I then tidy the kitchen with Tom. It is such a great feeling to come home to a clean and tidy kitchen. This step doesn’t always happen. Some mornings are more chaotic than others.

Put Shoes On, Grab Bags & Leave

Then when it is time to go to work and school, we go to the mud area and put our shoes on (plus hats for the boys), grab our bags and then go.

This routine helps my day to flow better because it sets the motion and the energy for the day early. It helps us all to feel less overwhelmed when we get home from work and school. Especially if the day has been stressful. Coming home to less demands from the house, helps our neurodivergent brains to focus on calming our nervous system, nourishing our bodies and being of support to each other.

This routine is a guide for me and the family daily. It is designed to be flexible and not rigid. It works for our family and our unique designs, needs, values and lifestyle. It was an experiment in the beginning and we tweaked it until it fit. As our family evolves (get older), we will continue to adapt and reassess the routine. That is what flow is all about. When we feel forced we are not flowing. Something needs to give so that life (like a flowing river) can flow and adapt.
