3 steps to get started on your journey as a witch.

Coming out of the witch closet is not always easy. Of course it will depend on the environment that you live in, and the culture that surrounds you. I didn't grow up in a religious family, so the "coming out" wasn't major. My family have always supported me in whichever endeavour I have chosen. For that, I am thankful. However, a lot of my friends at the time, didn't understand it. When it came to witchcraft over wanting a boy to like me, I chose wanting the boy to like me. So for years, I suppressed the witch within me. Perhaps it is a lesson that I needed to learn that was carried over from a past life, but all I know is that when I lean into my calling and my practice- I am authentically me.

So how do you start your journey? That is entirely up to you. But what I do know that can help you to get started, is these three suggested steps:

1. Decide that you are a witch.

You and only you can decide if you are a witch. You don't need to wait for your invite to Hogwarts to arrive (though how cool would that be?). If you identify as a witch, you are a witch. As simple as that. The hardest bit may be the coming out of the 'witchy closet'. But the easiest bit is deciding that you are one.

2. Read about the fundamental basics of witchcraft.

Until you are brave enough (or safe enough) to 'come out', there are always books that you can start to read (if you can access them). There are many fields of witchcraft. You don't have to explore just one.

  1. Choose which one/s you are drawn to.

  2. Learn the basics and ethics behind it.

  3. Use your intuition about which field feels right for you.

Witchcraft is about forever learning new things.

I have created a YouTube video about my top 7 books if you would like some recommendations. Click on the play button below to watch.

3. Practice your craft.

You don't have to wait until you have read every book about witchcraft or you have passed a magick test to start practicing witchcraft. In fact by practicing, you are honing your skills and craft. You learn what works and what doesn't. I do recommend learning about protecting yourself and how energy works, before commencing your first spell. But some witches just like to delve in and see what happens and learn that way. I do feel that learning the ethics of the particular craft that you want to practice is respectful to those who traditionally practice it. For example, Voodoo magick, and Native American Magick. It may be appropriation to practice this magick depending on your culture.

You don't need to wait for your invite to Hogwarts to arrive from an owl (though how cool would that be?).

Get inspired.

Here is a list of inspiring YouTube witches that I recommend watching:

Belle Rose

Eadig

Ella Harrison

Sup Witchez

The Green Witch

The Red Headed Witch
